Nestled in the heart of Oakleigh’s Eaton Mall, Risk Bar oozes suburban chic.
Grey and orange leather chairs sit against a backdrop of cool stone tiling, modern mirrors and eye-catching lighting effects. This is the perfect location for a sneaky afternoon beer and burger, or a refreshing mid-evening cocktail with friends.
Plenty of seating in the mall allows patrons to watch the world go by in the sunshine. Groovy lounge tunes serenade diners during the daytime, while on Friday and Saturday nights a DJ spices things up with a medley of pop music from 7pm.
Open 7 days a week, from 11am to 1am, Risk Bar has a selection of convenient tapas options, such as the Risk Bar Trio of Brioche Sliders, with soft shell crab, slow-cooked beef brisket and peri peri chicken.
Based on demand, the owners expanded the menu to include mains, ranging from char-grilled chicken breast and eye fillet medallions, to pan-seared salmon and a seafood platter.
The drinks menu has a quirky catch – the origins of each cocktail are included.
Patrons can read about how the lychee martini originated in San Francisco in the 1860s, or how the mojito, which dates back to 16th century Havana, was believed to be a remedy for tropical illnesses and scurvy. The 2014 Risk Signature Cocktail features fireball cinnamon-flavoured whiskey, zesty lime juice, sugar syrup and apple juice.
The clientele is as diverse as the cocktails, from young families enjoying a meal on the weekend, to retirees indulging in a bottle of red and a cheese platter. On weekends, the venue comes alive with younger crowds taking in the live music and often late at night, the DJ will bust out a few Greek tunes in honour of the owners’ heritage.
The venue is also available for function hire.
New to hospitality, business partners Foni Strintzos and Con Nianiakas opened Risk Bar last December.
Mr Nianiakas’ wife, Tina Gobjias, said Risk Bar allowed locals to experience what Chapel St in South Yarra had to offer, right in the heart of Oakleigh.
“It’s that boutique chic brought to Oakleigh, where someone can go and have beer on tap or a glass of champagne” she said.
“Who could ever imagine that you’d go down to Oakleigh for a bottle of Cristal or Moet?
“It’s somewhere where you can have a nice cocktail, enjoy a meal and soak up the atmosphere.”
