Whether you’re a local looking for some traditional Mediterranean cuisine or just passing through Oakleigh’s shopping precinct and in the mood for something new, Euro Bites Greek Eatery is an unmistakable part of Oakleigh’s thriving Greek community.

Business owner Aytac Genc, a self-taught cook of Turkish descent, began Euro Bites in 2009 with his wife, whose Greek heritage influenced the offerings on the menu.

“We try to keep it as traditional as possible, even with the plating up of the dish,” Mr Genc said.

Rather than being driven by trends to modernise dishes, Euro Bites combines a nostalgia for the Greek food and flavours they were raised on, with classic ingredients such as aromatic herbs, yoghurt, fresh vegetables, and charcoal grilled meat and fish.

The must-try dishes on Euro Bite’s current menu is the seafood saganaki, featuring King Prawns and mussels baked in a spicy tomato salsa, topped with feta and herbs, and served with warm bread. Another speciality is their chicken gyro, layered with croutons, salsa, yoghurt sauce, and melt-in-your-mouth charcoal meat.

Euro Bites has a diverse range of customers come through their door – families, elderly people, young people, and the corporate crowd from local businesses.

What’s most heartening to hear is how many people have embraced Greek cuisine regardless of their nationality or cultural heritage, Mr Genc said.

While they have their regular customers, many people also come in because the menu choices and range of traditional dishes are something different for them.

“The only thing I can’t get them to eat is olives!” Mr Genc joked.

For those looking to explore beyond that staple ingredient, there are lots of lunch and dinner options you can enjoy, from falafel plates to skewers, gyros, wholesome salads and delicious dips.

Running an eatery in Oakleigh has been a positive experience for Mr Genc and his team.

“Everyone’s invited. Everyone’s welcome. As a business owner, I respect that. Especially in running my own venue, I think it has been important to hold that integrity in the community. Everyone can enjoy themselves,” he said.
